Lisa Parkinson (M.A. University of Oxford, accredited family mediator, consultant and a Vice-President of the Family Mediators Association, England and Wales) qualified originally as a social worker in the field of mental health and family therapy. As a member of an interdisciplinary team with child psychologists and child psychiatrists, Lisa saw the need for mediation between separated parents in dispute over their children, rather than an adversarial legal system which heightened parental conflict, causing distress and potentially harmful consequences for their children. In 1978 she became co-founder and co-ordinator of the first out of court family mediation service in the UK. Similar centres soon followed and in 1988, together with five leading family lawyers in London, Lisa co-founded the national Family Mediators Association to provide family mediation on all issues (children, finance and property) and training in cross-disciplinary co-mediation. In the early 90s Lisa joined with colleagues in France to provide training in family mediation and as a founder member of World Mediation Forum, she took part in WMF’s inaugural conference in El Escorial organised by Daniel Bustelo in 1995. Since then, Lisa has taken part in mediation training and conferences in many countries, including the XIV Congreso Mundial de Mediación Familiar 2018 in Buenos Aires and (online) the XVI Congreso 2020. The 4th English edition of Lisa’s book on family mediation was published in April 2020 and the 2nd Spanish edition, Mediación Familiar – Teoría y Practica – Principios y Estrategias Operativas, translated by Ana Maria Sanchez Durán, will be published by Editorial Astrea, Buenos Aires in March 2021. There are also Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Slovenian and Turkish editions. Lisa has always had a special interest in child-inclusive mediation and she continues to give training in this area for accredited family mediators in the UK and Italy.
